Racial Slurs = Racism?

Are Racial Slurs the
Same Thing as Racism?
In your opinion, how accurate is this diagram? It makes sense to me that most racial slurs used today are not intended racism, but are used as jokes or as cuss words under duress, spoken by people who would deliberately avoid using or thinking these terms if it meant hatred or racism. It also seems sensible to conclude that a lot of racism is not spoken.

Thoughts?

I have a fondness in my heart for my "I Heart Niggers" t-shirt, man.

@Drakonskyr - You are one of the main examples in my mind of someone who uses the slurs without really being a hater. But sometimes you do verge on "troll," you know that? (Which of course makes "Drakonskry" an even more ironic Andrew-name.

Hey, I use nigger with LOVE, dammit!

I suppose I'm the high-end of the trolling spectrum. The successful troll! So virile in his hatred that it became pandemic! I AM THE EVOLUTION OF THE TROLL

Depends on context. Most of it is stupidity on here.

I think it's racist that black men and women can call each other the "N" word, and get of clean, but the moment a white guy tosses the word into the convo, it's game over. That double standard is just as racist as the word IMO.

I guess this is pretty accurate. It comes down to what context it's being used in, I suppose.
But it just kills me when people can throw around a racial slur to people of their own race, jokingly, but can't be on the receiving end of it. But I just swear off of all racial slurs, or anything offensive, but then again ... that's just me.
You can't dish out what you can't take. XD

There's also the way that you say the N word. Most people consider it racist when a person who isn't black say it with the "er" at the end instead of the "a". Point blank people shouldn't say any kind of racist slur. Not even jokingly b/c racism isn't something to joke about.

One thing I'm noticing about these comments is that majority of the focus is on the "N" word, when theres another completely different vocabulary for racial slurs.

The idea is that as long as you're discriminating against another race, it's racism, and using a racial slur to mockingly point out and demean a stereotype again about, a specific race, is also racism.

It doesn't matter, how the word is used, or in what context its used, if its used by the same race or if its used "jokingly" by another, it's still racist.

I think the "N" word has just escaped into Pop-Culture and thus, warped the mind of the American masses breeding ignorance among one another.

I mean, you don't hear Mexicans going "Yeah, you my Wetback" etc.

People use the N word here so often, because black people get so offended by it. Hm. I bet you didn't know my sister had a black collage professor that was racist. He said to the entire class... That when it rains, blacks did not need to attend. According to him, white people smell when it rains. Also, if you were black, you automatically pass. Not to mention the black fraternaty. They brand you. Like they would cattle. WTF. Yeah, had a white person done that.. LOL.

Yeah, of course I didn't know that, but that's also incredibly racist, no doubt about it. Why was that a reply to my comment? LOL

I think that pretty much hits it dead on. I generally do not use vulgarity at all, racial of otherwise. But I know of a web site run by an extreme racist who is even less likely to use vulgarity or racial slurs than I am. It all can be rather meaningless.

It's a fine line. I hear racial slurs as jokes 90% of the time. But it's a double edged sword--I've known people to be joking casually one moment, then cruelly needling the next. I'm generally wary when the jokes start, even amongst friends.

I suppose it depends on your definition of racial slur... some people are hypersensitive to anything race related. I try to avoid negative or positive comments about races of people in general because there are always those who will take things the wrong way...

I just wrote my senior project on racism (specifically racism in the fan culture of Italian football) and really delved into the whole mentality behind racism and racial slurs...based on all that, I'd respond with, yes, racial slurs do equal racism. I could spout off the whole definition of racism and even give ya a few of the justifications (the "accidental racist" is a good one), but bottom line, anything that catergorizes or differentiates a person into a group of people is a form of racism because it subjugates them by either differentiation itself or, in varying degree of cases, serving as an act (subconcious or not) of domination. k, sounds wordy, but pretty much it's not intent or perceived negativity that makes a thing racist, but simply the act of categorization.

...didn't read through other ppl's comments, but that's my initial response.

...on another note, I didn't see you at Yosemite this year, gabe! how have you been?

I know one thing, if they are the same then DMV is the biggest racist son of o' bitch ever. I don't think they are though. Racial slurs can be used in a racist way, and most often are. Sometimes they are not though.
